The logos of companies such as Google and Netflix bear all the hallmarks of contemporary design. Sleek and simple, their font and ensignia are immediately recognisable. As household names in the modern digital world, it is difficult to imagine how things might have looked if they’d existed during the earliest days of the internet.
Portugal-based designer and lettering artist Rafael Serra has created a series of retro reimaginings of famous logos. With old-school fonts and colour schemes, each image provides a delightful insight into what such brands could have looked like with these historical design principles in mind.
The images, posted to the Instagram page ‘logoshift’ has hit 20,000 likes, with many users offering varying choices for their favourite piece. Take a look at the series of posts below, and let us know which one is your pick of the bunch!
In our opinion, the Youtube logo, complete with kaleidoscopic TV screen, is a perfect retro reinterpretation of the video streaming service. Its blocky, capitalised font presents a strong look below its dazzling iconography. We can almost imagine loading up our Windows 95 and clicking on this icon to watch the latest Microsoft Paint tutorial.
Likewise, the Netflix logo looks like something you’d have emblazoned on an 80s gym sweatshirt, with bold, serrated typography appearing below a series of horizontal bars. The pastel colour scheme also works a treat, as a variation on the traditional black and red branding that the streaming giant is known for. Such faded colour palettes are seen throughout this series, and provide a unique reinterpretation of some of the brighter primary colours that many modern companies opt for.
